OBJECTIVES & IMPACT
Project Objectives
The project aims to revolutionize industrial and market applications by integrating advanced 2D materials, like graphene, into existing systems. Specifically, it:
- Fosters a strong academic-industry collaboration to deliver practical solutions with global benefits and regional impact in the UAE.
- Pushes the boundaries of 2D materials research, tailoring them to meet market demands and drive the commercialization of cutting-edge products.
- Explores ways to merge the unique nanoscale properties of graphene into traditional and additive manufacturing processes without disruptions.
- Develops high-performance prototypes and showcases with market-ready technologies, addressing real-world challenges like material sustainability, weight reduction, and efficient production methods.
Project Impact
The project aspires to reshape multiple industries by leveraging the unparalleled properties of 2D materials. Key highlights include:
- Enhanced Plastics for Pipe Industry: Developing graphene-filled PP and PE composites for advanced pipe fittings. These materials are compatible with additive manufacturing (AM) and ensure superior durability, fatigue resistance, and thermal performance while addressing challenges like gas permeation and degradation in hydrogen transport pipelines.
- Smart Functional Windows: Introducing energy-efficient smart windows with lightweight 3D-printed graphene frames and built-in heat exchangers. These windows optimize thermal balance, reduce dependency on conventional climate control, and eliminate the need for shading devices, all while supporting sustainable building practices.
- Antimicrobial Ventilator: Creating a next-generation ventilator with inherent antimicrobial properties using specially engineered 3D-printable materials. This innovation addresses air purification challenges and combats microbial growth, offering broader applications for everyday objects like handles, levers, and hand driers.
