National University of Singapore

The Institute for Functional Intelligent Materials (I-FIM) is the world’s first institute dedicated to the design, synthesis, and application of Functional Intelligent Materials (FIMs). Hosted at the National University of Singapore, I-FIM is helmed by Directors Nobel-Prize-winning materials scientist Professor Sir Konstantin Novoselov and Distinguished Professor Antonio Castro Neto. The Institute is home to a team of world-class academic investigators and their groups, poised to embark on a new approach to Materials research. I-FIM will create a library of designer materials – and develop systematic ways to describe them mathematically – as the building blocks of FIMs. Using these building blocks, the researchers at I-FIM will then develop a rulebook for predicting FIMs behaviour, structure and synthesis pathways. Using machine learning and robotics, the FIMs will be designed and synthesised with smart applications in mind. These applications could range from neuromorphic computers, to machine vision, smart membranes, smart catalysts, artificial tissues, and more.

Project’s Role for each organisation.

University of Patras

University of Patras (UoP) is the project coordinating unit, responsible for the overall project management including financial, administrative, scientific, and technical aspects (WP1). UoP is the leader of WP2 which aims for the definition, selection, and characterization of the monolithic and composite materials used for the development of the demos/prototypes. In WP3 will contribute to the evaluation of the 2DM‐Enhanced products for pipe industry and will lead the activities for the development of innovative shielding materials based on graphene and other 2D materials‐based composites. Additionally, WP4 will contribute to the optimization of AM parameters for material properties, alongside the development of 3D printed graphene-based sensors for environmental monitoring and antipathogenic coatings for antimicrobial protection. UoP leads WP6, where it is responsible for dissemination, communication, and exploitation activities of the 2D-Enhanced, including multi-level outreach, branding, digital presence, and promotional content creation.

Borouge

Borouge, in partnership with Khalifa University, will utilize its innovation capabilities to showcase the enhanced properties of polyolefin/2D nano-composites within the scope of the project. This initiative will involve the production of test items on a commercial scale, employing various polymer processing techniques and examining their structure-property relationships through advanced analytical, physical, and mechanical testing methods.

Khalifa University

Khalifa University (KU) will oversee the research activities in work package 3 “Enhanced Plastics for the Pipe Industry”, focusing on the development of polymer-graphene nanocomposites to enhance the mechanical and gas barrier properties of plastic pipes. Additionally, KU will integrate additive manufacturing technologies with these advanced nanocomposites to enable large-scale printing of functional components for industrial applications. KU also contributes to the investigation of electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding properties, exploring how graphene-enhanced polymers can provide superior conductivity and protection in various engineering applications. Through these efforts, KU plays a critical role in advancing material innovation and manufacturing solutions for the pipe industry.
